Some places
to use as a base:
On the South coast: the south-west
of Crete has much smaller and quieter
villages than the north coast. The
climate is dryer, the nature wilder.
There is no major tourist centre
in the region and it is a little
further to get to from the airport
than the northern resorts.
- Paleochora is a little far
from the centre of the White Mountains
and closer to the hills of Selinou.
The village itself has a good
beach, plenty of choice of accommodation
and restaurants and even some
nightlife.
- Sougia is a small village with
a very nice beach and good accommodation.
It is a little far from everything
else but offers some beautiful
walks in its vicinity.
- Agia Roumeli is very close to
the mountains and great walks
can be undertaken from there
- Loutro is located in one of
the best walking areas. The village
is very pretty but can get quite
full in high season.
- Hora Sfakion, the small capital
of the region of Sfakia is also
very close to the "walking
action" and has the advantage
(and disadvantage) of being connected
by road.
- Frangokastello has nice beaches
but is a little far from the starting
point of most walks.
On the North coast: the north-west
Crete is far more developed than
the South but there are still quite
a few places that are not overdeveloped.
Access to airports and many places
of interest (old towns, Minoan palaces,
museums) is easier than if you are
in the South so it may be more appropriate
for sightseeing holidays. There
are also plenty of nice walks on
the northern side of the White Mountains
and the plains and hills below.
- Kastelli and the area around
has been spared by mass tourism.
Lovely green hilly countryside
towards the South and a lot of
good walking. It is far from the
White Mountains area though.
- Kolymbari, at the beginning
of the Rodopou peninsula is a
little bit closer to it all: the
tourism and the White Mountains.
- Maleme and the coast all the
way to Chania, very touristic,
easy road access to anywhere.
- Kalives and Almirida in the
region of Apokoronas have good
walks in the area and are not
too far from the region of Sfakia,
just over the mountains.
- Georgioupolis offers a lot of
hotels to choose from, very long
sandy beach and not too far from
some great walks, either close
by, on the northern slopes of
the White Mountains or over the
mountains in the region of Sfakia.
